Horary Question Consultations

The basic premise of astrology is that there is a correlation between celestial and earthly events. In modern times this notion is often expressed with the maxim that 'anything born or done at a moment in time shares the quality of that moment'. Natal astrology takes this basic principle and applies it to the event of the birth of an individual, under the premise that the configuration of the planets at the moment of a person's birth have something significant to say about the nature and course of their life. Horary takes this notion of a temporal correspondence between celestial and earthly events one step further and applies it in a more abstract sense to the 'birth' of a question.

Horary Astrology Defined

Horary astrology, also known as interrogational astrology, is the practice of determining the answer to a specific question through the examination and interpretation of a horoscopic chart cast for the moment that the question is posed to an astrologer. The theory is that since the question exists and is formulated and posed at a specific moment in time, then the answer must also exist at that moment, and this answer is reflected by the alignment of certain celestial bodies in a horoscopic chart cast for that point in time. By following a very specific set of rules, and adhering to the logic that is inherent in the system, the answer to the question is sought to be derived primarily, if not exclusively, based upon the chart of the question itself.

Example Horary Question: Will I get my laptop back?

Guidelines for Asking Horary Questions

  • The question must be important to the person asking it. This statement has two meanings. The first is that in order for a horary question to work the question must have real, serious, mental or emotional meaning to the person who is asking it. Trivial matters do not make for good horary questions. Really it is best if the person asking the question is so consumed by the question and needs it answered badly enough that they are not really so much invested in the outcome of it either way, but more so that they just need to know the answer even if it doesn't work out the way that they would prefer. A good horary question is one that has been eating away at a person for at least a night and a day, so much so that by the time that it is posed to the astrologer it has fully matured and can be articulated very precisely. The other meaning to the above rule is that a horary question has to have great importance to the questioner him or herself in a personal way, and therefore questions should not be asked for other people, or about other people's business unless it has direct personal meaning to the person asking. Some would object to this rule, and in certain cases there are exceptions, but in general I ask that this be followed pretty closely by my clients.
  • The question must be answerable. This seems pretty self-explanatory. The question must be verifiable. Horary doesn't work very well with most spiritual questions concerning karma, or reincarnation, theology and other such things like speculative history and philosophy for example. For example, "what is the meaning of life" is not a legitimate horary question, since there is no viable way to answer the question with the techniques of horary astrology.
  • The question can only be asked once. This is a generally accepted rule for most forms of divination, such as Tarot and the I-Ching for example. The only possible exception being that if a great deal of time has passed and circumstances have changed significantly since the last time you asked the question, then it may be permissible to ask the question again in light of the new circumstances.
  • Only one question at a time. This is also a pretty simple and generally accepted rule. At any given horary consultation only one question may be asked at that time. Part of the reason being that this ensures that the question asked is of the utmost importance to the querent, and it increases the probability that the moment in which the question is asked is indeed a 'true' horary moment.

Phrasing The Question

Horary can be much more specific and precise than natal astrology, which can be both good and bad in certain instances. While it is very good at answering specific questions like "will I get the job?", it is not very good at asking broader ranging questions such as "what kind of a career am I best suited for?". Most horary questions should be answerable with a straight forward yes or no response. When phrasing a horary question the precise wording of it is very important, and ambiguous or subjective terms like the word "should" are not supposed to be used if you wish to receive a clear answer to the question.

For example "should I take the job offer?" would not be an appropriate horary question because whether or not the job 'should' be taken is ambiguous and involves some sort of subjective value judgement about the quality of the job and its appropriateness for you, presumably. A more appropriate horary question would be "will I get the job?" because it has a straightforward yes or no answer which can be depicted in a horoscopic chart with much less ambiguity or subjective value judgements on my part. So, please do not pose questions about what you 'should' do, but instead think more in terms of questions about what 'will' happen.

The question answered by the horary chart is always the one that is posed to the astrologer exactly as it is phrased, so it is good to think about your question quite a bit beforehand and to phrase it very precisely.

Not sure if your question is appropriate for horary?

Many people that are unfamiliar with horary sometimes have a hard time determining if they have a legitimate horary question to ask. A good way to figure this out is to determine if your question has any association with one of the 12 houses of a horoscopic chart that astrologers use to designate topics or areas of life. The following is a list of the 12 houses and some of the topics that are associated with each house, as well as a few relevant examples of typical horary questions that are associated with each of the houses.

  • 1st house: life, body, health, vitality, the basic physical constitution of the native.
  • 2nd house: material objects, possessions, money, things that the native owns in general.
    • Example: "Will I get my computer back?"
  • 3rd house: siblings, travel, being abroad, education, etc.
  • 4th house: home, parents, family, residence, etc.
    • "Will I move?"
  • 5th house: children, pregnancy, sex, etc.
    • "Am I pregnant?"
  • 6th house: illnesses, injuries, enemies, work, your job, etc.
    • "Will I get the job?"
  • 7th house: relationships, marriage, partnerships, other people in general, etc.
    • "Will Jane and I get married?"
  • 8th house: death, the money or possessions of other people, inheritance, benefits from death, etc.
    • "Is John dead?"
  • 9th house: foreign countries, travel, higher education and schooling, foreigners, etc.
    • "Will I get accepted into the university?"
  • 10th house: career, what one does, social standing, reputation, superiors, etc.
    • "Will I become the president of the company?"
  • 11th house: friends, associates, groups, social movements, alliances, etc.
    • "Is my friend safe?"
  • 12th house: loss, enemies, jail, long term ailments and sickness, etc.
    • "Will I go to jail?"

How is a horary consultation conducted?

First things first: formulate your question and then send it to me in an email through the email address listed on the contact page. If your question is relatively straight forward and answerable then I shouldn't need too much additional information, although feel free to include some background information about the question if you think that it is pertinent. If the question is unclear then I may need to ask you for clarification. If, on the other hand, need some more information then please feel free to contact me before you pose the question.

Once I have received the question and cast the chart I will start working on writting up the delineation. Usually a horary consultation consists of a two or three page written report which gives the answer to the question as well as a detailed rationale that explains why I came to the conclusion that I did regarding the outcome of question. This writeup will sent to you in an email as a PDF once I have finished the delineation and you have paid for the consultation, along with a copy of the horary chart that was cast. If you need any further clarification after that point then we will likely correspond about it by email.
