What is Horary Astrology?

The basic premise of astrology is that anything born or done at a moment in time shares the quality of that moment. Natal astrology takes this principle and applies it to the event of the birth of an individual under the premise that the configuration of the planets at the moment of a person's birth have something significant to say about the nature and course of their life. Horary takes this notion of temporal moments of origin and applies it in a more abstract sense to the birth of a question.

Interrogational astrology, also known as horary astrology, is the practice of determining the answer to a specific question through the examination and interpretation of a horoscopic chart cast for the moment that the question is posed to an astrologer.  The theory is that since the question exists and is formulated and posed at a specific moment in time, then the answer must also exist at that moment and this answer is reflected by the alignment of certain celestial bodies in a horoscopic chart cast for that point in time.  By following a very specific set of rules and adhering to the logic that is inherent in the system the answer to the question is sought to be derived primarily, if not exclusively, based upon the chart of the question itself.

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to a branch of horoscopic astrology known as 'horary' or 'interrogational' astrology, which is an ancient application of astrology that was perfected in the Middle Ages. This course addresses the history and origins of horary, as well as the philosophical, theoretical and technical underpinnings of this application of astrology. Students will finish the course with a strong foundation in the history, techniques and practice of horary astrology, and with a solid practical understanding of how to delineate horary charts on their own.

Each portion of the course contains detailed readings from a course manual that was written specifically for the course, as well as detailed slide show presentations with accompanying hour-long audio lectures in MP3 format that cove the basic concepts covered each week. There are also guided reading assignments from the primary source texts of the astrological tradition, as well as other additional optional reading materials that are provided on the course site for further study.

Each week students may choose to participate in the class and get feedback by responding to study board question in the student forums, or by completing short optional written assignments on the topics covered during a particular part of the course. Others may opt to simply focus on studying the material provided in the course without completing assignments. The course is designed to be flexible so that each student may adapt it to their own unique needs and time schedules.

The entire course is presented over the internet through interactive online software that each student gains access to upon registration. A new group of students start on the first day of each month, although new students can register and gain early access to the course site at anytime.

Since the course is presented online there are no specific times that students will need to be available for the course, and each person is able to study at their own pace and adapt the course to their own schedule. The course is designed as a three week or three part course, although some students find that there is more than three weeks of material to digest, so each person is given six months access to the course site upon registering for the course. When a new student registers for the course they will be emailed a user name and a password upon shortly thereafter and they will be able to log in to the course site that contains all of the materials immediately and study at their leisure.

Synopsis of Each Part of the Course

The first part of the course is historical and philosophical in nature, and in it we cover the historical undercurrents which fostered the creation and development of horary astrology. The origins of horary astrology and its philosophical and conceptual foundations are the primary focus in this initial module.

The second part of the course focuses on the technical apparatus underlying horary astrology, with an overview of the core concepts that are necessary in order to apply this branch of the tradition. In this part of the course several core technical concepts which provide the basis for a precise approach to predictive astrology are discussed. The latter part of this module is focused on the notion of the 'consultation chart', and determining what a client or a querent is approaching an astrologer about, and what their circumstances were in leading up to that moment. This is essentially the technical approach to determining what has occurred in the past.

The third part of the course covers the technical apparatus of horary astrology proper, with a focus on determining the answer to a specific question that is posed to an astrologer a given moment in time. This part of the course provides the tools and techniques for determining what will take place in the future based on the chart of the question itself. Many actual chart examples and case studies are used in order to exhibit the usage of the techniqies and how to actually delineate and answer a horary question in practice.

Additional Recommended Reading Material

In order to make this a complete introduction to horary astrology there are some additional highly recommended reading texts that students are recommended to acquire in order to help supplement and expand their reading for the course. Since each student's financial situation may be different, I have provided some cheapter alternate reading texts in the event that the recommended primary text cannot be obtained for the course. Depending on how much you are able to spend on additional recommended reading material, the cost usually ranges from between $40 - $100 USD in order to aquire the additional reading materials through online vendors. The recommended reading list is provided to students upon registering for the course.

Ultimately the course itself is designed to be a stand alone course, and the purchase of additional supplementary reading material is not required in order to learn horary. For those who opt not to obtain the recommended reading texts there are plenty of other reading materials that are provided online through the course site itself upon registering for the course.
